Dear Miss Lonelyhearts: I am a fat married lady in my 30s with an obese husband. We went on a diet a month ago and I have lost 10 pounds of pure ugly. He has lost diddly squat. I'm gung-ho, and he's always cheating. I don't want to lose my will to lose weight and be healthy again. I used to be a runner years ago. How can I keep myself up, when he's pulling me down?

Dear Miss Lonelyhearts: I am a fat married lady in my 30s with an obese husband. We went on a diet a month ago and I have lost 10 pounds of pure ugly. He has lost diddly squat. I’m gung-ho, and he’s always cheating. I don’t want to lose my will to lose weight and be healthy again. I used to be a runner years ago. How can I keep myself up, when he’s pulling me down?

— Scared I’ll Stop, Fort Garry

Dear Scared: You don’t need him for this. Change your weight-loss allies to a walking group with friends, and if you start running again there are organized running groups all over the city. You should also join a weight-loss support group online where you chat with people and trade success stories and challenges. Take your weight-losing focus off your husband today and place it elsewhere, with people who are really into it.

Don’t criticize or blame him, or even tell him this is your change of direction, then it becomes fun for you, and it’s your personal adventure. You can stop preaching and blaming your guy as the partner who’s bringing you down. He may even feel inspired to try by just watching you. You go, girlfriend!
