Dear Miss Lonelyhearts: I am cautiously thinking about taking a lover. Two of my women friends (in their late 40s and early 50s) have done it, and they seem a lot happier than me. Oh, they’re taking chances and could end up divorced, I know, but at least they’re feeling alive and loved, and have a reason for getting up in the morning.

Hey there, time traveller!

One of them even says her husband is paying her much more attention, now that he suspects he has some competition. He has had other women on and off for years, but she doesn’t care because she married him for his money. She says he’s good as a friend, but there’s no love between them.

My husband isn’t married to me. He has three mistresses — his golf course, his best buddy and his work partner. All his leisure time goes to golfing five days a week, a building project with his best buddy, two-hour meetings at lunch and after work to “discuss important things” and to drink a lot. He often leaves his car downtown and comes home in a cab drunk or stays downtown overnight.

Our children are out of the house and gone and it is deathly quiet. I have my job and invite my women friends over to the pool, but I have no leisure activities with my husband. Do I love him? I don’t know anymore and don’t even think about it.

— Lonely Wife, Winnipeg

Dear Lonely: So, how about discussing an open marriage with your husband? Unlike you, I sincerely doubt the man is staying in hotels when he’s getting bombed downtown. I sniff an affair. If you have an open marriage, you could maybe keep your family intact, but does it really matter so much to maintain that ruse now that the kids are gone and the loveless marriage is a big lie? Many lonely married people get a new start in life when they take a chance and become single again.

Dear Miss Lonelyhearts: I am deeply in love with this girl I’ll call Isabella. Not her name, but it suits her exotic nature. As far as I can tell, she has only one flaw. She dresses like a hooker and shows off all her assets. It’s embarrassing to me, but she thinks it’s hot-looking and she turns heads. What she doesn’t know Is that a lot of people roll their eyes and feel sorry for her poor taste.

We met my mum for coffee the other day and I asked her just this once to dress conservatively. Instead, she wore something showing lots of cleavage and a bare midriff, like she was auditioning for a porn film. Mom was speechless. She asked me later why I let this strange woman into my life. I don’t want to break up with Isabella, but what can I do to solve this problem?

— In Love With Her Anyway, Osborne Village

Dear In Love: What does Isabella hope to gain by dressing this way, and why were you so attracted to her yourself? You don’t say anything about her personality.

In some ways, dressing in such a wild way is a power play and a protection. She can wag her finger and guys come running. That way, if some guy hurts her and she loses him, there will be another one coming along any minute. The trouble is they may not love her like you do.

By dressing like a hooker for the meeting with you and your mother, she was saying she refuses to bend to please you or older folks on any occasion. You need to find out what that’s all about. She went out of her way to shock your mother — almost daring her to freak out. There are some deep problems going on with this young woman, probably stemming from her upbringing. It’s time to talk to her, and gently investigate.

J’accuse!: Kinew uses French to fry interim Tory leader over alleged caucus subterfuge

Chris Kitching and Maggie Macintosh 4 minute read 5:55 PM CDT

NDP Premier Wab Kinew took a dig at the Progressive Conservatives’ leadership change while facing off with Obby Khan’s short-term replacement for the first time in question period Thursday.

It came after interim Tory leader Konrad Narth accused the New Democrats of failing to implement “stronger” bail reform and enforcement measures as promised.

“Now we see there is less crime in Manitoba than there was when the Progressive Conservatives were in government. What are they doing now? Well, they found knives and chased their old leader out,” Kinew said, speaking in French.

“We don’t even know who’s going to be the PC leader next month… next year? We don’t know. What we know is that we’re working on making communities safer.”

Man who killed two Indigenous women, was accused of killing third, back in prison less than year after statutory release

A Winnipeg man convicted of killing two First Nations women more than a decade ago — with charges stayed in a third slaying — has been sent back to prison less than a year after he left under conditions.

Parole Board of Canada officials revoked 67-year-old Shawn Lamb’s statutory release after a hearing last week.

“Your actions are not beyond your control, yet you continue to wilfully make poor decisions that place the public at risk,” board member Arun Kundu-Thomsen wrote in a decision released this week.

Lamb gained statutory release — a legislated conditional release most federal inmates automatically qualify for after serving two-thirds of their sentence — in November last year and lived in several Ontario facilities for federal offenders.

Face up to fact you blew it with ex-wife

Maureen Scurfield 4 minute read 2:01 AM CDT

DEAR MISS LONELYHEARTS: My ex-wife just moved back to town and looks like a changed woman. She spent years married to me, and our kids just graduated in a city where we once lived together. That was without help from me, other than minor financial stuff.

She has found a great new job back in Winnipeg and she’ll do very well. I admire her more than any other woman I ever met, but she’s not interested in me at all.

I once had a solid, responsible job and then got into drinking, and I cheated on her. That’s why she left town. Now I’ve been sober and sorry for many years.

I asked her last weekend if I could take her out to dinner and she said no and changed the subject.

Obsessed stalker who shot, killed young woman at bus stop in 1993 dies behind bars at age 74

A Winnipeg man who stalked a woman for several years before shooting her dead in the street in 1993 has died in Stony Mountain prison.

On Monday, 74-year-old Ronald Edd Bell died of apparent natural causes at the federal prison just north of Winnipeg, the Correctional Service of Canada said.

Bell had been in prison since May 30, 1994, when he was given a life sentence with no chance of parole for 18 years for killing Terry-Lyn Babb, 25, on Jan. 21, 1993.

Bell walked up behind an unsuspecting Babb, who was waiting at a bus stop at Sherbrook Street and Wolseley Avenue, and shot her in the head with a pistol in front of horrified witnesses, says the Free Press report of his sentencing hearing.

Province has provided $20M in flood relief so far, infrastructure minister says

Chris Kitching 2 minute read 6:38 PM CDT

The province has sent out $20 million in relief to Manitobans and municipalities affected by severe flooding in several communities in June and July, Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Lisa Naylor told MLAs Thursday.

Naylor said the government received more than 2,400 applications for financial assistance from residents and businesses, plus applications from 64 local authorities.

Provincial staff have so far processed more than 2,000 applications, she said.

Manitoba offered financial assistance after many homes and businesses were inundated, swathes of farm land were submerged and municipal roads and provincial highways were washed out by overland flooding from western Manitoba to the Interlake.
