Smelly boyfriend has her raising a stink

Dear Miss Lonelyhearts: My boyfriend’s feet and armpits stink something awful in the summer when he works construction. He’s a university student the rest of the time. He’s too tired when he gets home to walk into the shower and clean off those nasty smells. He just makes it in the door and collapses into a chair and snaps on the TV to veg out and nap.

Opinion

Hey there, time traveller!

By the time he finally wakes up and takes off his sweaty shirt and boots, there’s a cloud throughout the apartment. I have to open the windows to get that smell out. I’m home 30 minutes before he is, but he doesn’t even want to talk to me when he gets home, he’s so tired. How can I get my big stinker into the shower before he falls asleep and fills our place with Eau de B.O.?

— Holding My Nose, Wolseley

Dear Holding: Time to sympathize, not criticize. Your man’s just beat and his last ounce of energy got him home. Instead of nagging him about the way he smells when he wakes up, prevent the problem. When he gets home, hand him a cold drink out of the fridge, help him peel off his clothes and throw them in a big garbage bag, to close up and wash later.

Then lead him by the hand to the shower, turn the water to the temperature he likes, peck him on his dirty, salty lips and push him gently into the stall. Leave a large-size towel outside the shower, and have a fan or small air conditioner trained on the bed where he can nap for a while, looking and smelling like the handsome hunk he is. Could be a great start to sexy summer evening for you two. At least you’re starting off evenings thinking, “Oh, yeah!” instead of, “Oh, Yech!”

Dear Miss Lonelyhearts: I’m a single older guy with too many lady friends. I didn’t go after them. They came after me. Two are getting my attention with baking, and one got me with a different kind of hot stuff. The women who live in my 55-plus block are competitive types!

The problem is the woman I really want lives in another city and I will see her over the winter when I go back south as a snowbird. In the meantime, two of the ladies have offered themselves as my part-time girlfriend. I never got this much action when I was in my 20s and good-looking. My snowbird girlfriend says it has to be a mutual deal. If I get to see people when I’m away from her, she will, too. And believe me, she will! She’s smart and beautiful, a great dancer and nice, too. What should I do?

— Torn Between Four Women, Winnipeg

Dear Torn: Whatever happened to “playing the field” with discretion? It makes no sense that most of the four women you’ve shown an interest in know about each other and how far you’ve gone. You’re not getting married to any of them, as far as I can tell. Why not ask the snowbird to marry you — if you want her to be all yours — and go visit her once a month until it happens?

As for the other three ladies, if Ms. Snowbird doesn’t want you, pick one of them. Or find someone else that charms you. The world of women who are attracted to you has opened up for the first time in your life. Don’t spoil it with a lack of discretion.

Alouettes not short on reasons why they want to beat Bombers

Taylor Allen 5 minute read 7:55 PM CDT

MONTREAL — Clinching top spot in the East isn’t the only reason why Tyson Philpot is itching to beat the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

“Obviously, my brother (Jalen) plays for the (Calgary) Stampeders, so I’d love to help push the Stampeders above them and help him get in the playoffs,” said the star receiver for the Montreal Alouettes after Friday’s walkthrough.

While the Als are sitting comfortably at 11-3, the Bombers (7-7) are trying to fend off Calgary (7-8) while also keeping pace with B.C. and Saskatchewan, who both entered the week at 8-6.

But there’s another reason that applies to everyone on the Als: they want revenge for the embarrassing 44-28 loss they suffered in Winnipeg in Week 13.

Jets new backup Stevenson ‘stoked’ to be in tandem with Skinner

Mike McIntyre 6 minute read Wednesday, Sep. 30, 2026

It didn’t take long to get the dirt on the newest member of the Winnipeg Jets.

Meet Clay Stevenson, who has no problem if you prefer to refer to him by his long-standing nickname of “Mud.”

“You know, Clay is in the mud, and there you go. That’s it, right there,” Stevenson said Wednesday with a laugh. “I got it in juniors when I was playing in Coquitlam, and kind of stuck ever since.”

Stevenson is now hoping to make a name for himself in a city that, quite fittingly, translates to “muddy water” in Cree. The 27-year-old from Alberta was placed on waivers by the Washington Capitals and claimed by the Jets, who were looking to clarify a goaltending situation which was as murky as the Red River.

Port of Churchill signs agreement with Dutch port

Aaron Epp 2 minute read Tuesday, Sep. 29, 2026

Arctic Gateway Group, operator of the Port of Churchill, has signed an agreement with the Port of Rotterdam in the Netherlands to attract business and strengthen supply chains linking Western Canada and Europe.

The agreement enables the two ports to work together to develop new trade in critical minerals and energy products, connect Canadian producers with European buyers, and identify opportunities to improve the supply chain from Western Canadian resource projects through Churchill and into European markets.

The Port of Rotterdam is Europe’s largest port and home to more than 3,000 businesses across its industrial complex, serving as a major gateway for critical raw materials and energy.

Meanwhile, the Port of Churchill has been identified as a transformative national strategy for Canada and is emerging as a northern trade corridor connecting Western Canada’s resources to global markets.

Jets bench boss Arniel talks rebuilding from last season’s struggles

Mike McIntyre and Ken Wiebe 12 minute read Yesterday at 5:42 PM CDT

Scott Arniel has a lot on his plate these days.

But the head coach of the Winnipeg Jets took some time Thursday to sit down with Free Press hockey writers Mike McIntyre and Ken Wiebe to discuss a number of topics on the eve of a new hockey season. This interview has been condensed and edited for clarity.

Wiebe: What was the evaluation of last season like? What did you personally do in an attempt to improve after going from first-overall to 26th-overall?

I just went back and looked at things and made sure my communication was where it needed to be with my players. Was my communication where it needed to be with my boss, with my general manager (Kevin Cheveldayoff)? How our coaching staff worked. How we handled highs and lows. Things I felt I could have done better.

Health minister warns $1.2 billion in annual federal funding set to expire in March

Scott Billeck 3 minute read Yesterday at 6:58 PM CDT

Manitoba’s health minister is warning of possible cuts to health care with $1.2 billion in annual funding from Ottawa set to expire next year.

“We’re very concerned that what would be the largest cut to health care in a generation is right in front of us,” Health Minister Uzoma Asagwara said Thursday at the Manitoba legislature. “It means that services that Manitobans depend on will be in jeopardy and be at risk.

“Any reductions, any cuts from Canada, will have direct impacts on the health outcomes of Manitobans.”

Asagwara, who serves as the provincial and territorial health minister lead, chaired a virtual meeting Tuesday with provincial and territorial health ministers to discuss federal funding for health care, mental health care and substance use services, which is scheduled to expire March 31, 2027.
