Dear Miss Lonelyhearts: This is about a relationship with my cat, but please don’t ignore this letter! He’s been everything to me, but I might have to give him away because I’m travelling more often with my job and feel guilty leaving him alone for two or three days. He’s always so happy to see me when I come back; I can’t help but think he’s lonely when I’m gone.

Hey there, time traveller!

I do work at home most of the time, so he’s great company when I’m there, but I feel selfish if he’s stressed by my travelling. He’s the greatest cat in the world, and there are some people I know who’d would love to have him. Yet I still want him!

— Torn, Tuxedo

Dear Torn: You could go the other way and get a second, younger cat at a time when you’ll be home more than usual. Another heartbeat in the house will make everybody more comfortable. You might also look for a feeding helper to come and play with the cats. You can also show your cat sitter how to turn on the cat TV channels.

Whatever you do, don’t just pile up food in an automatic dispenser with a water fountain and leave for three days. That’s hard on a cat who has you around so much and isn’t used to an empty house for that long. When you leave for a time, play melodious music on a radio in one room and have talk radio on in another to provide a human voice. You can figure out what kind of music your cat likes by seeing if they stay in the room. Totally silent houses can be creepy for animals. Two cats would have each other to play with, as well as the sitter, and might have a pretty good time while you are away.

Dear Miss Lonelyhearts: I recently had a hysterectomy. I want to know what I can do to see if everything is OK down there so I can go out on a date in a few months. I’ve never been comfortable using toys or objects to test the waters. I also don’t want to tell the first partner I have about my operation.

I’ve mentioned it a few times now to people I didn’t know that well and they always get embarrassed, like it’s something bad. I told my best platonic guy friend and he said, “Is it like they scooped out a melon?”

I roared at him, “No, it’s not!” I’m still a little touchy on the subject. I don’t think people would react like that if I’d had an appendectomy? How am I supposed to bring this up with someone I’m dating so they can go easy on me the first time we have sex? I have to make sure everything is in working order.

— Need to Test Drive, Brandon

Dear Test Drive: Guys don’t mean to be rude or clumsy. They mostly just want to please. They do need a little information, so they aren’t imagining melon scooping and other freaky scenarios. Assure your new man that everything is exactly in the right place for sex — just the reproductive bits are gone, so there’s no danger of getting pregnant. Guys often like to hear that, if they aren’t looking for babies.

Get used to sex without anyone else in the bed and you will have better results when you finally resume lovemaking with a partner. You really need to soften your stance on sex toys though, so a new guy in your life isn’t your first experiment. Check out the Love Nest, which has trained staff and stock a variety of quality lubricants and different sizes of vibrators, and are always willing to counsel.

Collisions send people to hospital; one fatality

2 minute read Yesterday at 10:42 AM CDT

Five people are in hospital following a two-vehicle collision on Monday at the corner of Pembina Highway and Plaza Drive in which three pedestrians were struck.

On Sept. 28, just after 4:30 p.m., a Ford Fusion was travelling northbound on Pembina Highway through the Plaza Drive intersection with a green light when it was struck by a westbound Honda Fit that failed to stop for a red light at Plaza Drive. The Honda Fit mounted the sidewalk, striking three young children who were with an adult.

The three children were transported to hospital in stable condition with minor injuries. The driver of the Honda, a woman in her 70s, and the passenger, a man in his 80s, were transported to hospital in unstable condition. They were both upgraded to stable condition. The driver was issued a ticket under the Highway Traffic Act.

The Winnipeg Police Service’s Traffic Division is investigating.

Storylines aplenty as Jets’ regular season set to begin

Ken Wiebe and Mike McIntyre 8 minute read 6:25 PM CDT

If the Winnipeg Jets get their way over the course of the coming months, this 84-game redemption tour will extend beyond the regular season.

For the time being, the focus of this group is to leave the disappointment of a 26th-place finish in the rearview mirror and to get back to playing the style that allowed them to be in the Stanley Cup playoffs three consecutive springs before falling eight points short last April.

“We’re just ready for a fresh start where we’re looking ahead, and we’re excited to get the season underway,” captain Adam Lowry said Thursday. “Obviously, a short training camp but I feel like we got up to speed.”

The Boston Bruins will be Friday’s opponent (7 p.m.) in this 16th season opener for the Jets since the franchise relocated back in 2011, and the storylines surrounding the club are plentiful.

Health minister warns $1.2 billion in annual federal funding set to expire in March

Scott Billeck 3 minute read 6:58 PM CDT

Manitoba’s health minister is warning of possible cuts to health care with $1.2 billion in annual funding from Ottawa set to expire next year.

“We’re very concerned that what would be the largest cut to health care in a generation is right in front of us,” Health Minister Uzoma Asagwara said Thursday at the Manitoba legislature. “It means that services that Manitobans depend on will be in jeopardy and be at risk.

“Any reductions, any cuts from Canada, will have direct impacts on the health outcomes of Manitobans.”

Asagwara, who serves as the provincial and territorial health minister lead, chaired a virtual meeting Tuesday with provincial and territorial health ministers to discuss federal funding for health care, mental health care and substance use services, which is scheduled to expire March 31, 2027.

And just like that, the Northern Super League playoffs are nearly set with only fourth place — and home-field advantage, of course — up for grabs.

AFC Toronto is on a tear, and the Wild continue to terrorize the post-season race. Week 23 was a wild ride — pun intended.

With three weeks of the regular-season schedule remaining, the crystal ball of who has the best chance of taking the Diana B. Matheson Cup has never been cloudier.

And with a pivotal Friday night matchup, here’s an early edition of View from Row Z.

Face up to fact you blew it with ex-wife

Maureen Scurfield 4 minute read 2:01 AM CDT

DEAR MISS LONELYHEARTS: My ex-wife just moved back to town and looks like a changed woman. She spent years married to me, and our kids just graduated in a city where we once lived together. That was without help from me, other than minor financial stuff.

She has found a great new job back in Winnipeg and she’ll do very well. I admire her more than any other woman I ever met, but she’s not interested in me at all.

I once had a solid, responsible job and then got into drinking, and I cheated on her. That’s why she left town. Now I’ve been sober and sorry for many years.

I asked her last weekend if I could take her out to dinner and she said no and changed the subject.
