Opinion

Hey there, time traveller!
This article was published 25/09/2018 (2929 days ago), so information in it may no longer be current.

Dear Miss Lonelyhearts: I met a guy at a Goldeyes game who was so funny and entertaining I wanted to see him again. But I did nothing. That was it — or was it?

“You snooze, you lose,” so they say, and I didn’t give him any way to reach me or ask him for his contact information.

This guy was with another guy. At one point, his buddy teased him saying, “You single guys are all the same,” so I knew he was free. I know their first names and where they both work — and even the department, from our conversation — but I’m feeling shy to call.

What do you suggest?  — Blew My Chance? St. Boniface

Dear Blew: You should have called up the one you liked within two or three days and told him how much you enjoyed your conversation at the game. Then you could have suggested meeting for a drink.

If you think it’s too late to call this guy now, consider this: I once met a guy who had a social card — not a business card, though it’s the same size — just a fun card with his name and number that read “For coffee and conversation, call me.”

Why not make one for yourself? It can be just your first name in fancy script and your email, if you prefer. Or, you can scribble on the back of your business card if you’re OK giving that much information away. Everybody should have a little card of some kind; looking for a paper and a pen, and scribbling a note gets too personal, too fast.

When you hand your card to the person, smile and say, “You’re fun and interesting. I’d like to see you again.” Then turn and go. Don’t stand there, like you’re waiting for the guy to ask you for a date. He may be in shock for a minute.

If he calls you back and really wants to keep talking, suggest a place for a drink or lunch in a few days. It’s worth a try. Don’t lose out on what could be a winning relationship.

Dear Miss Lonelyhearts: My young ex-wife has been trying to get back together with me and it is giving me the willies. She was deceptively nice when I met her — great company and fun in bed — and that’s why I married her. But that’s just the face she shows to the outside world or to a new love.

When you commit to her, she’s actually lazy and acts kind of depressed at home. When she’s out of the house, she’s fine — outgoing, friendly, happy, sexy and tempting. Sex is the only thing we got right together.

At home, she would lie down and complain she wasn’t feeling well and want me to run and fetch for her. Her own mother does this with her husband and grown kids.

I got away from this woman at no small cost! I don’t want that little witch back, though she’s charming on the phone and a heck of a great date.

How do I get her to leave me alone? I really don’t want anything more to do with her, but I have no one else and I get really frustrated sexually. Any advice would be appreciated. —Lonely and Tempted, Westwood

Dear Lonely and Tempted: Who are you trying to kid? You’re about to enter the ring for Round 2.

Loneliness is a dangerous thing and sex with your ex is dangling right before you. You’re weakening, buddy. Maybe you need to phone-block your ex and get busy looking for a new woman. Otherwise, you’re going to be in a certain young witch’s clutches by Halloween.

You might consider joining a singles activities club like Adventures for Successful Singles, which boasts 50 sports and arts and social activities opportunities a month.

Or check out Meetup Winnipeg online, which offers many activities. If you don’t do something soon, you’re going to slowly drift back to your ex’s bed — and that could be a big waste of your time and money.

Woman took ‘meaningful’ responsibility after disposing of body: lawyer

Dean Pritchard 4 minute read Wednesday, Sep. 30, 2026

A woman who was threatened with death if she didn’t help dispose the body of a Mexican man murdered in the basement of a North End home should serve no more jail time, a judge has been told.

Devlin Langlois, 25, has pleaded guilty to accessory after the fact to murder in the March 2025 killing of 28-year-old Diego Moscoza.

“By pleading guilty, Ms. Langlois has already taken meaningful accountability for her actions,” defence lawyer Joshua Rogala told King’s Bench Justice Candace Grammond at a sentencing hearing Monday.

He urged the judge to sentence Langlois to the equivalent of 14 months already served, plus two years supervised probation.

Small businesses outline election priorities

Robin Bezte 5 minute read 2:00 AM CDT

Since moving to Winnipeg earlier this year, I have come to know the city through its small businesses. As a new Exchange District resident, grabbing coffee at Little Sister, walking through The Forks Market and stopping at Pho Hoang for lunch have become part of my routine. These are the places that give Winnipeg’s neighbourhoods their character and have helped make a new city feel like home.

That is why an empty storefront never feels like just vacant real estate. It represents someone’s investment and hope. When a small business disappears, the community loses a piece of itself.

On Oct. 28, Manitobans in most municipalities will choose their next mayors, reeves and councillors. While city councils may not set interest rates or negotiate global trade agreements, they do have some control over many of the barriers entrepreneurs encounter day to day, from property tax bills and permit applications to public safety and construction disruptions.

Ahead of the upcoming elections, the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) surveyed Manitoba small business owners to get a sense of their municipal priorities and concerns.

Face up to fact you blew it with ex-wife

Maureen Scurfield 4 minute read Yesterday at 2:01 AM CDT

DEAR MISS LONELYHEARTS: My ex-wife just moved back to town and looks like a changed woman. She spent years married to me, and our kids just graduated in a city where we once lived together. That was without help from me, other than minor financial stuff.

She has found a great new job back in Winnipeg and she’ll do very well. I admire her more than any other woman I ever met, but she’s not interested in me at all.

I once had a solid, responsible job and then got into drinking, and I cheated on her. That’s why she left town. Now I’ve been sober and sorry for many years.

I asked her last weekend if I could take her out to dinner and she said no and changed the subject.

Man who killed two Indigenous women, was accused of killing third, back in prison less than year after statutory release

Erik Pindera 4 minute read Yesterday at 4:06 PM CDT

A Winnipeg man convicted of killing two First Nations women more than a decade ago — with charges stayed in a third slaying — has been sent back to prison less than a year after he left under conditions.

Parole Board of Canada officials revoked 67-year-old Shawn Lamb’s statutory release after a hearing last week.

“Your actions are not beyond your control, yet you continue to wilfully make poor decisions that place the public at risk,” board member Arun Kundu-Thomsen wrote in a decision released this week.

Lamb gained statutory release — a legislated conditional release most federal inmates automatically qualify for after serving two-thirds of their sentence — in November last year and lived in several Ontario facilities for federal offenders.
