Opinion

Hey there, time traveller!
This article was published 18/02/2016 (3872 days ago), so information in it may no longer be current.

Dear Miss Lonelyhearts: I’m caught between a rock and a hard place. I’ve been dating the same guy since I was 17 and he’s 100 per cent in love with me. When we started dating, he had a job, a plan for school, was in shape and had friends and hobbies that didn’t include me.

Now he’s overweight, doesn’t have a job, dropped out of school a bunch of times and doesn’t do much else besides doing things with me. I still love him, and I recognize that this could just be a rough patch in his life right now, but I am scared because we are both in our 20s and he wants us to get our own place together. Luckily, he knows right now neither of us could afford to do that because I’m in school and he’s jobless.

Here’s the tricky part: I have a male friend I met at university who is a bit older than me, but he’s everything my boyfriend is not. He’s in shape, responsible and smart. When I first became friends with him, he had a girlfriend so everything was good; however, he broke up with her a couple of months ago and is still single. Every time I go near him, my heart flutters. We flirt a bit, and my friends and family think he has feelings for me, but is waiting for the right time to tell me.

If I were single I would definitely go out with him. However, he has said he is not looking for a relationship. What should I do? Should I stay with my boyfriend and accept that my feelings for the other guy are there because my boyfriend is going through a rough patch? Or, should I break up with my boyfriend to try to go out with the guy from school? — Confused, North of Winnipeg

Dear Confused: Do you need to have a boyfriend every minute, like a game of musical chairs? This new fellow may have told you the truth, that he needs an emotional rest after his breakup.

Your boyfriend no longer suits you, and hasn’t for years, yet you hang on. Why should he smarten up his life as long as he’s got you? Why don’t you tell him it’s time he got his act together because you have lost patience? He needs to get some help from someone who isn’t his girlfriend. At any rate, he doesn’t suit you now.

If you break up with him, you will probably need a little break yourself. It’s natural. It’s also best to get over the remnants of your long-term relationship so you’re not always talking about your ex. You may mourn the guy your boyfriend used to be, or maybe you’ve already done that. People can mourn well before a relationship finally ends.

Within a few weeks of getting yourself free, I’m betting this other guy will ask you out for a date, or you may want to ask him out, but right now, don’t make leaving your boyfriend contingent upon whether this other guy is available for a steady relationship. That’s a lot of pressure to start out with, and why would either of you want that?

No more Jets 1.0 or 2.0: League announces all eras of Winnipeg’s club to be merged

Mark Scheifele’s goal was always to chase down his mentor and former Barrie Colts head coach Dale Hawerchuk, no matter what the official record book said.

So when the NHL and the Winnipeg Jets announced on Thursday morning that they were consolidating the franchise history to include the 1.0 and 2.0 eras (including the Atlanta Thrashers chapter of the club), Scheifele was among those to give the move two thumbs up.

“Yeah, it clarifies it for you guys more, not as much (for) me,” said Scheifele. “It’s really cool to bring in the old Jets records, and especially Dale. Chasing him down was always on my mind. So, it’s cool to do it actually in the record books.”

Scheifele remains the franchise leader in games played (961) and he’s likely to eclipse Hawerchuk in goals (Scheifele has 372 to Hawerchuk’s 379) and points (Scheifele has 907 to Hawerchuk’s 929) this season. He now has Thomas Steen’s 553 assists in his sights after amassing 535 heading into 2026-27.

You’d only regret not acting on longtime crush

Maureen Scurfield 3 minute read Yesterday at 2:00 AM CDT

DEAR MISS LONELYHEARTS: For years I had a big crush on my older sister’s hot-looking best friend who was often over at our house. My sister found out about my crush and told me, “I’ll kill you, if you go after my friend!” I was crushed at the time, and kept my distance, although I still had erotic dreams about that girl a lot.

This fall my sister is going to university out of province, and her friend is still here in Winnipeg, going to the same college as I am. I ran into her recently at a mall. She looked me up and down and said, “Wow!” Was she teasing me like a little boy or was she actually flirting with me now my sister’s out of the way?

More importantly, do I need my sister’s permission to ask out this friend of hers now she lives in Ontario? Please help!

Tread carefully because the sun is opposite Neptune in your sign which can make things confusing. You might think you know what’s going on but actually you either do not have the facts or you’re on the wrong page. And it’s probably not be your fault.

Two U.S. presidents, and America’s decline

Editorial 4 minute read 2:00 AM CDT

“Let us have faith that right makes might, and in that faith, let us, to the end, dare to do our duty as we understand it.” — Abraham Lincoln in his Cooper Union address, given in New York City in 1860.

“When you add the United States and Venezuela together, we have more than 60 per of the oil in the world. So it’s perhaps the biggest deal. It was a war, but it’s perhaps the biggest deal ever made. To the victor belong the spoils.” — U.S. President Donald Trump, speaking to the United Nations on Tuesday. (And a point of clarification — combining U.S. and Venezuelan oil would amount to 22 per cent of global oil reserves.)

It is quite the juxtaposition: Lincoln speaking in one of his strongest speeches, making the case that slavery should not be extended to the Northern Territories of the U.S. It was a sentence — the closing line in his speech, in fact — which argued that moral truth and justice will prevail against brute force, and that moral behaviour will, in itself, become power.

Donald Trump essentially argued that the obverse is true: that brute force justifies all behaviour — saying that might is right. The end of seizing control justifies the means, the means in this case being an invasion of Venezuela and the end being gaining de facto control of an independent nation’s resources.
