Bodybuilder may have blown it with lame insult

Dear Miss Lonelyhearts: I love to pump weights and the woman I first married loved it, too. That relationship bit the dust because we married too young. I’m a musician and saw a lot of women during the past six years before I recently fell in love again with a new woman. She hadn’t said anything about my muscles since we started dating last fall. She seemed to get off on my long hair and guitar-playing.

Last night, she got drunk and confessed she thinks my muscles are “goofy-looking” and “a bit much.” She made a face when she said it. Suddenly, I felt self-conscious. I asked her why she didn’t say anything sooner and she replied: “Well, there’s other things I like about you, but I’m too drunk to think of anything.”

I said, “Well, baby, there’s a few things I could criticize about your body, but I’m too much of a gentleman to mention them.” Then she got all defensive and put on her coat.

I said, “It’s going to take a longer coat than that to cover your fat ankles.” Then she went out to her car and took her fat ankles home, maybe for good. Now what? Please write back ASAP. I don’t know what to say or do next and she’s not calling. I miss her.

— Is It Finished? St. Boniface

Dear Is it Finished: This rates as a lovers’ tiff, complicated by insults to the body. That old saying, “Sticks and stones can break my bones but words will never hurt me,” is untrue. Words hurt worse, and last longer.

You two have both insulted aspects of each other’s bodies that won’t be changed. You could try making a list of everything you like about this girlfriend and give it to her with a dozen roses and an apology card if you want her back that badly — but don’t stop going to the gym.

Body-building is a part of you, a part of that you love and the way you like to look. It can’t hurt on stage, either. Do you really want to deflate your muscles and have skinny/flabby regular musculature for her, or anybody? And is there anything she can do about her fat ankles? Wear socks to bed? Ridiculous. You can be sure she won’t be getting new ankles for you, either.

Nurses disciplined for botched IV infusion

Nicole Buffie 3 minute read Thursday, Oct. 8, 2026

Two nurses working at the Grace Hospital have been reprimanded and fined $2,500 each for an IV infusion gone bad and an attempted coverup.

The incident happened on November 23, 2023 when a nurse asked a colleague to set up an IV infusion on him in an unused operating room.

During the attempted IV start, the nurse lost consciousness. The nurse who attempted the IV drip and another who was in the room called for help and several staff responded.

The nurse regained consciousness and vomited, but recovered and continued to work his shift, a March 18 decision by the College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba says.

Jets’ game flies south against Ducks

The Winnipeg Jets sure looked like a team that was running on fumes Friday night.

Playing for the fifth time in eight days, the club suffered its first regulation loss of the young season — a lacklustre 5-1 showing against the Anaheim Ducks at Canada Life Centre.

While we won’t question the effort, the execution was a different story. Sloppy plays, missed passes, porous defensive-zone coverage and iffy goaltending made this a tough watch for the 13,693 fans in attendance.

“Just some mental things that happened. Obviously some physical things as well,” said head coach Scott Arniel.

Bombers, Stamps rumble a can’t-miss must-win

Taylor Allen 7 minute read Yesterday at 6:41 PM CDT

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers, Calgary Stampeders and Saskatchewan Roughriders are playing musical chairs and pretty soon the music is going to stop.

One of them will be left without a seat at the post-season table, and Saturday’s clash between the Bombers (7-8) and Stampeders (8-8) at Princess Auto Stadium (6 p.m.) will go a long way toward determining who that will be.

You’re not going to want to miss this one.

“We’ve shown we can play great, we’ve shown we can play terrible. So, let’s try to play on the great side and really lock in,” said Bombers halfback Evan Holm on the team’s mindset this week.

Bit of creepy consultation could go a long way

Maureen Scurfield 5 minute read Yesterday at 2:01 AM CDT

DEAR MISS LONELYHEARTS: Halloween has always been my favourite time of year. I do my house up with lots of spooky lighting and characters on the lawn with eerie sounds booming out.

But last year I got seriously hassled by some people in the neighbourhood who thought it was too creepy. How do I get them on board this year? I don’t want to fight with them again.

— Want to Be Good Neighbour, River Heights

Dear Good Neighbour: Go to your close neighbours and explain what you want to do with your yard for Halloween this year, and also provide them with a firm time by which the celebrating will wrap up and things can quiet down.

The man later died.
