Opinion

Hey there, time traveller!

Dear Miss Lonelyhearts: I was supposed to get married to my fiancé shortly after COVID hit but we postponed the wedding, and then had to postpone it again. I just wept. My dream wedding has shrunk down to an event that’s hardly worth holding.

Last night, in tears again, I told my wonderful guy — who’s living with me now — I didn’t know if I even wanted to do the wedding anymore. He said, “Baby, I want to be your real husband!”

What’s the matter with me? I just want to wave a wand and make it all happen with no work or further disappointments. Now I’m crying again!

— Unmarried for Life? Grant Park

Dear Unmarried: You have COVID fatigue, my dear. It’s understandable. So, try to put this wedding planning worry away — for six months — and take it out again when the worst of COVID has passed.

Then you can finally make plans and reservations a few months ahead that you can actually keep. That way you can have a wedding that’s big enough to welcome your family and good friends, and you can wear your wedding dress and do it up beautifully for you and your guy.

Dear Miss Lonelyhearts: Help! I need to get out of here. I’m 21 and living at my girlfriend’s mother’s house — so we can be together and give her mom a hand.

Her mom’s a widow with bad arthritis. I help her with light and heavy cleaning, snow removal and the car. I’ve been doing it all.

My girlfriend just pays $400 a month and sits on her butt. Last night the Princess was in another tired and nasty mood, and picked a mean fight for no reason with her mother — she swore at her and made her cry. I came out of the bedroom, got some Kleenex and put my arm around her mother — sided with her, basically.

My girlfriend blew sky high. She pulled me away into our bedroom and told me I had “no right” to side with her mom, since I’m living there on “her” money! Obviously, my hard work doesn’t count. Now everything is unbearably tense! I feel like I don’t belong here anymore. But where do I go? I have a job but it doesn’t pay that much. I hate staying here now that my girlfriend’s called me a leech.

Truth be told, I don’t want to be with her another month now that l’ve seen her ugly side come out, but I don’t have enough money to move out yet. Please help!

— Dying to Run, Osborne Village

Dear Dying to Run: Finding more work, more money and a place to call your own will improve your life greatly — even if you don’t have a new girlfriend for a bit. You know this relationship isn’t working out and won’t be long-term, so don’t waste any unnecessary time.

Start looking for more work immediately! You’re going to need more money very soon to move out and be independent.

You need your own small place when it’s a little warmer and safer, because more people have vaccinations.

Meanwhile, start paying some cash — even $200 a month — directly to “mom” to even up the power issue.

Then start combing neighbourhoods you like for a private place, or a house to share with buddies. There are quite a few signs up now. Good luck on your new life!

Inflation-battered U.S. voters could prove to be key Canadian ally in fight against Trump’s trade tyranny

Dan Lett 5 minute read Monday, Aug. 24, 2026

Increasingly, it appears that if U.S. President Donald Trump is going to back away from punitive tariffs against Canada, it will be because of mounting pressure from within the United States and not because of tough talk and countermeasures from this side of the border.

AI literacy course mandatory at U of W Collegiate

Maggie Macintosh 5 minute read Updated: Yesterday at 9:25 AM CDT

The University of Winnipeg Collegiate is requiring new students to complete artificial intelligence 101 lessons and offering a first-of-its-kind elective for those who want to perfect their chatbot prompts.

The private high school is piloting two projects this year in a bid to improve digital literacy on the downtown campus.

Every Grade 9 and 10 student will have to pass an approximately two-hour long online course about “AI essentials.”

Dean Osaed Khan likened the mandatory e-learning sessions to requiring students to complete a safety course before they can participate in a science lab.

Motion seeks to remove longtime head of Southern Chiefs’ Organization due to ‘behaviour’ concerns

Carol Sanders 4 minute read 6:06 PM CDT

For the second time in a year, the leadership of Southern Chiefs’ Organization Grand Chief Jerry Daniels is being called into question.

A motion obtained by the Free Press calls “immediately” for a special summit of the 33 SCO chiefs to consider removing Daniels, who’s been at the helm since 2017.

The Aug. 17 motion, put forward by Lake Manitoba First Nation Chief Cornell McLean and Bloodvein First Nation Chief Lisa Young, cites concerns about “governance, leadership, accountability, transparency, organizational decision-making and confidence of member Nations in the current leadership of the organization.”

McLean would not provide specific examples Wednesday but said the “behaviour” of Daniels is a concern.
