DEAR MISS LONELYHEARTS: My nervy old girlfriend — the heartbreaker of my younger self — looked me up and came to see me at my work recently. The sudden breakup with her when I was a young guy almost killed me, so I asked her what the heck she wanted with me now.

She said she wanted to apologize for not giving me enough credit when we were younger. Apparently, she didn’t think I was aggressive enough to succeed in business.

I recall from back when we dated that she wanted to be well set up and to have a bunch of kids, so I asked her how that worked out for her. She said financially it’s been good with her children’s dad, but that it wasn’t really a love relationship and it ended recently.

I then asked her a second time what she wanted from me, and she said, “Just one dinner with you like we used to have, and if it isn’t good, I won’t bother you anymore.” I told her I would have to think about it. Lame answer, I know.

So, should I go out with her or am I just asking for trouble?

— Curious But Cautious, downtown

Dear Curious: If you don’t go, you’ll always wonder what might have happened.

Look, there are not enough adventures in most people’s lives, and this may be a chance to have a memorable one, so definitely accept the date.

If it’s boring or somehow painful, leave politely after dessert knowing an old chapter in your life is closed forever. But if it’s good, and you two are both single again and have learned some important love and life lessons, it might be interesting to explore what could happen now — instead of just wondering.

Dear Miss Lonelyhearts: My new neighbour who bought the land next to my property is an older guy, and I’m a divorced woman in my late 30s.

He has been admiring my horses — I had spotted him doing so a couple times from a distance — and now he has asked me if I would like to go for a ride on a horse he owns.

I asked him what his wife would think about that, and he said, “Nothing. I’m old. She trusts me.” I said I would think about it and get back to him. Frankly, I just don’t know what to think here.

— Wanting to Go, West St. Paul

Dear Wanting: Don’t miss out on this generous offer, and don’t jump to the conclusion this must be your neighbour making a pass at you.

You’ve already raised the issue and this fellow has addressed it and acknowledged his wife. So don’t assume the worst and snub your neighbour and this opportunity.

If you’re uncomfortable going alone with him, perhaps a friend of yours — or even his wife — could come along with the two of you to enjoy the ride.

City puts Osborne Village lot up for sale third time

Joyanne Pursaga 5 minute read Yesterday at 4:57 PM CDT

The city is making a third attempt to sell a seemingly prime Osborne Street property, after an offer for the surface parking lot fell through earlier this year.

The 772-square-metre space at 145 Osborne St., which formerly operated as an official paid city parking lot, has been posted for sale once again.

It may puzzle some Winnipeggers to see the site in the heart of Osborne Village remain empty so long after the city declared it surplus in 2020.

However, a few different challenges may limit its appeal to potential buyers, alocal real estate agent said.

It’s your call on further contact with ‘dad’

Maureen Scurfield 4 minute read Yesterday at 2:01 AM CDT

DEAR MISS LONELYHEARTS: My birth father has shown up in Manitoba — he got a transfer here for a job. He has never expressed any interest in me before except to send my mother pay-off money over the years.

At his insistence, I met recently with him and his wife for lunch and then we went to a mall where he wanted to buy me really expensive running shoes. I’m an adult — not a little kid.

Also, “Dad” is not a success in my eyes. Where was he when I really needed him?

Unfortunately, I look just like him — the younger version my mom says she fell for years ago. Apparently, I passed muster at the first meeting with him and he wants to have a barbecue at their house to show me around to other relatives.

BRANDON — Contestants from across the continent are trotting into Brandon’s Keystone Centre for Canada’s National Arabian Championship.

The championship is reserved for Arabian and Arabian-derived horse breeds and involves more than 300 horses as well as riders and trainers.

While the competition began Thursday and runs until Aug. 15, the event really ramps up on Monday when it expands into the main arena.

Taryn Weiss, a youth rider from Michigan who won a judged exhibition Thursday morning on a horse from Silver Sands Performance Horses, said the annual event tests skills that have implications for her future.

On Thursday, Winnipeg Police Service renewed the call for help from the public to solve the missing person case.

Gilbert Plains Country Club closes for remainder of season due to flood damage

Ken Wiebe 6 minute read Yesterday at 5:50 PM CDT

Scott McCallum has made the trek to the Gilbert Plains Country Club clubhouse countless times.

But this was the first time the golf professional and general manager of the course required hip waders to get to his office.

Walking hand in hand with his wife Lindsay, McCallum didn’t need much time to see the devastation caused by the flash flooding in the Parkland region in late June.

“We’re on a river and it’s a beautiful golf course, but anytime you’re on a body of water you know that you’re taking a chance of events like this happening,” McCallum said in a telephone interview. “To this magnitude, we’ve never seen anything like it before. So, this is new to us.
