DEAR MISS LONELYHEARTS: I was very hurt seeing my boyfriend on his cellphone 24/7, only a few months after moving in with him. He slept with it under his pillow in his hand; he thought I didn’t know. I was so furious and I felt lonely and heartbroken. When I was finally living with him, after his begging for that, I was completely ignored, left standing or sitting, always waiting beside the person who would rather speak to ANYONE ELSE but me. Yesterday, I cleaned everything out of his house. I got help from my two brothers, and I moved home. He showed up at my dad’s house looking for me, banging on the door. My brothers answered the door for me. He tried to barge through them to the kitchen where he could see me, but my big dad — fit and 240 lbs. — stepped through and roared, “Get away from my daughter, and never bother her again!”

He tried to barge through them to the kitchen where he could see me, but my big dad — fit and 240 lbs. — stepped through and roared, “Get away from my daughter, and never bother her again!”

My ex-boyfriend yelled, “Why?” Why? Why? I love her. I never cheated on her!” My father’s words, I’ll never forget: “You cheated, all right. You insulted her every day, and broke her heart. You preferred your ridiculous cellphone to my wonderful daughter, you idiot! Take your phone and run. Don’t call her from your car or I will rip out the window and break your cellphone into a million pieces.”

He hasn’t called since, and I am also a different person since. My father loves his kids and brought us up with all his love, his full attention and his giving heart. How could I settle for someone less? — Changed Me Overnight, Winnipeg

Dear Changed: There’s more to learn from this than the cellphone abuse. Your boyfriend lost interest after he moved you into his house. The challenge was over. Though he may not have actually slept with someone else, you can bet he was talking to his next challenge(s), especially hiding his phone under the pillow so you couldn’t see caller ID. I’m glad you heard your dad’s noisy heartfelt speech (along with the rest of the neighbourhood) and you know what it means to be truly loved and respected.

Wawanesa rebrands newest branch WSI

Wawanesa Mutual Insurance Co. has completed its acquisition of Ontario-based Everest Insurance Company of Canada and rebranded it as WSI, expanding Wawanesa’s commercial capabilities.

WSI will operate as a distinct organization within the Wawanesa group of companies, retaining the expertise, talent and underwriting discipline that established Everest as a respected player in the speciality market, Wawanesa announced on Thursday.

Wawanesa acquired Everest Canada from Everest Group Ltd., a Delaware-based global reinsurance and insurance provider. The deal was first announced in March and received regulatory approval in September. Financial terms were not disclosed.

“It was a very competitive process,” Wawanesa president and CEO Evan Johnston said. “This was a sought-after asset and we were the successful bidder, which I’m very proud of.”

Face up to fact you blew it with ex-wife

Maureen Scurfield 4 minute read 2:01 AM CDT

DEAR MISS LONELYHEARTS: My ex-wife just moved back to town and looks like a changed woman. She spent years married to me, and our kids just graduated in a city where we once lived together. That was without help from me, other than minor financial stuff.

She has found a great new job back in Winnipeg and she’ll do very well. I admire her more than any other woman I ever met, but she’s not interested in me at all.

I once had a solid, responsible job and then got into drinking, and I cheated on her. That’s why she left town. Now I’ve been sober and sorry for many years.

I asked her last weekend if I could take her out to dinner and she said no and changed the subject.

Jets new backup Stevenson ‘stoked’ to be in tandem with Skinner

Mike McIntyre 6 minute read Yesterday at 4:23 PM CDT

It didn’t take long to get the dirt on the newest member of the Winnipeg Jets.

Meet Clay Stevenson, who has no problem if you prefer to refer to him by his long-standing nickname of “Mud.”

“You know, Clay is in the mud, and there you go. That’s it, right there,” Stevenson said Wednesday with a laugh. “I got it in juniors when I was playing in Coquitlam, and kind of stuck ever since.”

Stevenson is now hoping to make a name for himself in a city that, quite fittingly, translates to “muddy water” in Cree. The 27-year-old from Alberta was placed on waivers by the Washington Capitals and claimed by the Jets, who were looking to clarify a goaltending situation which was as murky as the Red River.

Acquisition of former residential school grounds will help educate future generations: premier

Connor McDowell and Morgan Modjeski 5 minute read Tuesday, Sep. 29, 2026

Premier Wab Kinew says a former Brandon-area campground acquired by the province will help educate future generations about the horrors of residential schools.

“We live in an era where people are trying to deny what happened in residential schools,” Kinew said during a Tuesday afternoon visit to Turtle Crossing Campground, near the former Brandon Indian Residential School. “It’s an important part of our national history, and keeping that truth alive.”

Kinew officially announced the province’s plan Tuesday, in partnership with the City of Brandon, to acquire and protect the site where the bodies of more than 50 Indigenous children are located.

The premier said the property has “huge national significance” for education about residential school history because it is one of the “most documented” in the country. He carried photographs, and some 20th century newspaper clippings from the Brandon Sun around the site Tuesday.

Health minister warns $1.2 billion in annual federal funding set to expire in March

Scott Billeck 3 minute read 6:58 PM CDT

Manitoba’s health minister is warning of possible cuts to health care with $1.2 billion in annual funding from Ottawa set to expire next year.

“We’re very concerned that what would be the largest cut to health care in a generation is right in front of us,” Health Minister Uzoma Asagwara said Thursday at the Manitoba legislature. “It means that services that Manitobans depend on will be in jeopardy and be at risk.

“Any reductions, any cuts from Canada, will have direct impacts on the health outcomes of Manitobans.”

Asagwara, who serves as the provincial and territorial health minister lead, chaired a virtual meeting Tuesday with provincial and territorial health ministers to discuss federal funding for health care, mental health care and substance use services, which is scheduled to expire March 31, 2027.
