Ditch grinch as present to yourself

Dear Miss Lonelyhearts: I love Christmas and have decorated my small house and yard to the hilt. I just met a new guy and he thinks Christmas is “ridiculous.” We had been getting along really well and having fun, but then I brought him over for what was supposed to be the inaugural ball on my new bed. He mocked everything I had worked so hard to do. I have coloured lights on the bed and a pretty tree with big pine bows with giant hand-tied red ribbons on them, and all he could do was make fun of me.

I felt my sexual desire for him disappearing over dinner. By the time we were in the bedroom and he put his hand in an intimate place, I was so turned off I told him to get out. He looked at me in disbelief, got dressed and slammed the door on the way out. Since then, he has been calling and trying to be really nice. He has never said he’s sorry because he isn’t. He thinks I am silly and I think he’s a grinch, but decent men are hard to find.

Am I stupid to run him off like this, just because he’s a grinch about Christmas?

— Festive Elf, North End

Dear Festive: Is he worth your time, girlfriend? If you got mixed up with this grinch in a big way, such as living together or getting married, there would be many Christmases to come that would be hobbled by him. Should you have children, you couldn’t enjoy Christmas festivities with them freely with his sneering.

Why not look for a guy who loves the fun and joins in? Now is the perfect season to find one, if you stop wasting time with this guy’s calls. Good partnerships should expand a relationship, not limit it. Find a partner who brings more joy into your life, welcomes your friends, co-workers and extended family, and proudly introduces you to everybody he or she knows.

Think of this relationship with a grinch as some fireworks that started off with a sizzle, flew up part-way, and then sputtered out and fell to the ground.

Face up to fact you blew it with ex-wife

Maureen Scurfield 4 minute read Yesterday at 2:01 AM CDT

DEAR MISS LONELYHEARTS: My ex-wife just moved back to town and looks like a changed woman. She spent years married to me, and our kids just graduated in a city where we once lived together. That was without help from me, other than minor financial stuff.

She has found a great new job back in Winnipeg and she’ll do very well. I admire her more than any other woman I ever met, but she’s not interested in me at all.

I once had a solid, responsible job and then got into drinking, and I cheated on her. That’s why she left town. Now I’ve been sober and sorry for many years.

I asked her last weekend if I could take her out to dinner and she said no and changed the subject.

Sisters relieved hospital takes accountability after mother’s death

Scott Billeck 5 minute read Yesterday at 6:39 PM CDT

Eight months after losing their mother, two Winnipeg sisters say an internal hospital review has finally given them something they had been seeking since her death: accountability.

Chelsea Mann and Samantha Burns said St. Boniface Hospital officials acknowledged mistakes were made in the care of their mother, Judy Burns, during a recent meeting to discuss the findings of a critical incident review into her death.

The acknowledgement marked a significant departure from an earlier meeting with hospital officials, when they felt their concerns were largely dismissed.

Burns, 68, died on Jan. 21, three days after being admitted, after experiencing rectal bleeding.

You’re a solid, loyal sister, so worry not

Maureen Scurfield 4 minute read 2:00 AM CDT

DEAR MISS LONELYHEARTS: I ran into my sister’s husband at the bar recently. He was drinking with a bunch of people from his work. I noticed he was sitting close to a young woman, with his arm around her.

I just nodded without a smile as I slowly passed them. I kept on going, but he knew I saw them together. A few minutes later he came over — obviously drunk — and said, “You’re a good girl! You won’t say anything to your sister, will you?” Ha! I looked at him and said, “Of course I’m going to say something!”

My loyalty will always be to my sister. I phoned my sis in my car and blabbed. She tried to laugh it off, but she’s gone silent since — not answering my calls or messages. So apparently now I’m the troublemaker? That’d be just her style! What should I do?

Port of Churchill signs agreement with Dutch port

Aaron Epp 2 minute read Tuesday, Sep. 29, 2026

Arctic Gateway Group, operator of the Port of Churchill, has signed an agreement with the Port of Rotterdam in the Netherlands to attract business and strengthen supply chains linking Western Canada and Europe.

The agreement enables the two ports to work together to develop new trade in critical minerals and energy products, connect Canadian producers with European buyers, and identify opportunities to improve the supply chain from Western Canadian resource projects through Churchill and into European markets.

The Port of Rotterdam is Europe’s largest port and home to more than 3,000 businesses across its industrial complex, serving as a major gateway for critical raw materials and energy.

Meanwhile, the Port of Churchill has been identified as a transformative national strategy for Canada and is emerging as a northern trade corridor connecting Western Canada’s resources to global markets.
