Good Samaritan gets grief for helping

Dear Miss Lonelyhearts: I am pregnant and sick. I threw up right on the bus on the way to work the other day and the old lady across the aisle bent over and sopped it up with a bunch of Kleenex. When the bus door opened, she threw it out. Then this old biddy sitting behind her started giving her a terrible time for littering. What was she supposed to do — hold onto the Kleenexes and have them stink up the rest of the bus?

I was feeling too ill to get into the fight, so I stumbled off at the next stop and left the two of them going at it. I am feeling better now and feel guilty about leaving my Good Samaritan on her own when she was being (verbally) beaten up. I am at work and wondering what Miss Lonelyhearts would have done in the same predicament.

— Pregnant and Green-Faced, Winnipeg

Dear Pregnant: It’s probably a good thing it was you throwing up on that bus, and not yours truly. You very wisely got off the bus as you were in no shape for a fight and might have upchucked again. The Irish blood in this Maureen would have told off “the old biddy” and loudly thanked the woman who swabbed the deck, mentioning that if she had not thrown the tissues off the bus, everybody would have felt sick.

Yes, even though it was littering, some things take precedence, and saving a busload of people from that smell was heroic.

Woman took ‘meaningful’ responsibility after disposing of body: lawyer

Dean Pritchard 4 minute read Wednesday, Sep. 30, 2026

A woman who was threatened with death if she didn’t help dispose the body of a Mexican man murdered in the basement of a North End home should serve no more jail time, a judge has been told.

Devlin Langlois, 25, has pleaded guilty to accessory after the fact to murder in the March 2025 killing of 28-year-old Diego Moscoza.

“By pleading guilty, Ms. Langlois has already taken meaningful accountability for her actions,” defence lawyer Joshua Rogala told King’s Bench Justice Candace Grammond at a sentencing hearing Monday.

He urged the judge to sentence Langlois to the equivalent of 14 months already served, plus two years supervised probation.

Jets new backup Stevenson ‘stoked’ to be in tandem with Skinner

Mike McIntyre 6 minute read Wednesday, Sep. 30, 2026

It didn’t take long to get the dirt on the newest member of the Winnipeg Jets.

Meet Clay Stevenson, who has no problem if you prefer to refer to him by his long-standing nickname of “Mud.”

“You know, Clay is in the mud, and there you go. That’s it, right there,” Stevenson said Wednesday with a laugh. “I got it in juniors when I was playing in Coquitlam, and kind of stuck ever since.”

Stevenson is now hoping to make a name for himself in a city that, quite fittingly, translates to “muddy water” in Cree. The 27-year-old from Alberta was placed on waivers by the Washington Capitals and claimed by the Jets, who were looking to clarify a goaltending situation which was as murky as the Red River.
