DEAR MISS LONELYHEARTS: We were out at a lake at an end of the summer party and my new boyfriend introduced me to a guy I’d had an embarrassing one-night stand with. My boyfriend thought we might have a lot in common since we are both competitive runners.

Ha! You might call it that, since he hit the finish line in bed so quickly he knows a lot about speed. I didn’t want to see him another minute after that introduction at the party.

If Speedy had kept his big, fat mouth shut, we could have carried on from there, as if we hardly knew each other. But he was drunk, so he leered at me and said to my chest, “Oh yeah, we know each other very well. Intimately, you might say!”

I quickly turned to my boyfriend and told him I had one date with the guy and never saw him again because it didn’t go well. My boyfriend told the drunk guy to move along, pushed him over to the screen door and out on the deck.

When my guy and I were alone again, he asked how well I knew the guy, and I said barely, and then realized my Freudian slip. But he got it fast and rolled his eyes. He wasn’t laughing.

Then he got a funny look on his face and asked how many one-night stands I’ve had, but I told him to tell me his number first. He just let it go.

Things cooled between us that night, and he’s not calling. I miss him. What can I do to get him back close to me?

— Basically A Good Girl, River Heights

Dear Basically: One-night stands can seem like a good idea at the time — you’ve had a few drinks and the guy is cute and obviously very attracted to you and saying how beautiful you are. You may be thinking how much he likes you, but really he’s thinking, “She’s hot-looking — and how can I get her to take me home tonight?”

If a guy is prone to being selfish and sees this as a one-night stand with a perfect stranger, premature ejaculation is a common thing. The guy is goal-oriented and just hopes he doesn’t run into you again.

Speedy was drunk again, spotted you — and tried to embarrass you.

The only chance for you to get things back to “warm” with the new boyfriend is to have a friendly-style heart-to-heart about your former love lives. Maybe this problem will resolve itself.

Dear Miss Lonelyhearts: I work at business that will do almost anything to please clients visiting from other countries. I have been asked on several occasions by a client if I know somebody who could hook him up with a “date” with money being no object.

In the past I have said, “My wife would leave me if she ever found I did this,” and have gotten away with it, but the last VIP mentioned it to my boss, and said he was disappointed in me.

My superior could never fire me over this, but he’s not happy. Should I ask my boss if he will grant these client requests himself from now on, since he doesn’t disapprove of providing all kinds of entertainment for big customers?

The clients will continue to ask, because people in other countries do it for VIPs and it’s expected not to cause any trouble.

— Just Can’t Do It, Downtown

Dear Can’t Do It: If your boss switches your job with another, where the guy is more amenable to providing dates for customers, so be it.

This is not something you want to live with.

Perhaps you should look for a job at another company, in case the boss finds a subtle way to demote you.

‘Last chance’ clearance U.S. booze punted from Liquor Marts

Carol Sanders 4 minute read Updated: Yesterday at 7:51 PM CDT

American alcohol that returned to Manitoba Liquor Mart shelves in May as part of a “last chance” sale is headed back to storage or will be destroyed.

“We are removing U.S. liquor products from Liquor Mart shelves,” a spokesperson for Manitoba Liquor and Lotteries said Thursday. The Crown corporation had been pushing to off-load its stockpile of U.S. booze.

Premier Wab Kinew launched a provincewide boycott of American alcohol in March 2025 to fight back against tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump. Manitoba Liquor and Lotteries has not placed new orders since the boycott began, but it still had inventory.

As of early May, the U.S. inventory had a value of roughly $3.4 million, which is roughly one-third of what was removed from shelves and placed in storage, Manitoba Liquor and Lotteries has said. It was unable to provide an inventory update on Thursday.

Size up ex interest for what it is: trouble

Maureen Scurfield 4 minute read 2:00 AM CDT

DEAR MISS LONELYHEARTS: I spotted a familiar male figure at the beach, seeing him from behind. It had to be my old love from Grade 12. I’d know that big body anywhere. He was a football player and weightlifter — a real find in my graduation year. Why? I was five-foot-11 in heels. We were together for a few months, through graduation, but broke up shortly after. Mutual height can only get you so far.

I followed the big guy into the water at the lake, and tapped him on the shoulder. My high school ex turned around, holding a small child in his big arms. Within two minutes, his wife was suddenly at his side! I saw her wedding ring.

So much for that, or so I thought. But a few days later I got a phone call at my work, and my old love said he wanted to talk, now that there’d be no one listening in.

He went on to say how great it was to see me again, and he wanted to apologize for what an “awkward guy” he was in high school. He said he stopped calling me back then because he didn’t feel he was up to keeping someone like me interested.

Province announces phys-ed curriculum overhaul

Maggie Macintosh 6 minute read Updated: Yesterday at 6:55 PM CDT

Manitoba is overhauling phys-ed class and requiring all high school students to regularly work up a sweat on school grounds to graduate.

Premier Wab Kinew announced on Thursday that a new curriculum is being piloted across the kindergarten to Grade 12 system this fall.

Changes to phys-ed and health education — which apply to all grades, but Grade 11 and 12 students, in particular — will ensure these mandatory subjects are delivered entirely in-person, starting in the 2028-29 school year.

The policy is called “Every Body, Every Day.”
