CRTC looking into high number of cellphone tornado alerts in Manitoba during June storm

Canada’s telecom regulator is investigating why Manitobans received an “unusually high number” of tornado alerts on their cellphones when the province was hit by wild thunderstorms June 9.

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission gave Pelmorex Corp., which operates the national Alert Ready system, and three wireless providers — Bell, Rogers and Telus — until Sept. 11 to answer a list of questions.

“Commission staff have been informed of reports concerning tornado alerts that were issued in Winnipeg and southern Manitoba on June 9, 2026, in which members of the public reported receiving an unusually high number of wireless emergency alerts,” Simon Levasseur, the CRTC’s director of financial and multiplatform technology analysis, wrote in a letter dated Wednesday.

“Commission staff is gathering information on the event, any potential root causes that have been identified, as well as corrective actions that have or will be taken to address these causes.”

Another downtown eatery bites the dust

Another longtime downtown Winnipeg restaurant has closed its doors, leaving another hole in the city’s core.

Rudy’s Eat & Drink announced on social media it was closing after 15 years in Manitoba Hydro Place but did not cite a reason.

“Cheers to the years of local beer, burger weeks, jets games, weddings, catering, stone soup week, DJ nights, charitable events and everything in between — we will hold these memories forever,” the post said. “The end of an era — but there’s always another chapter.”

General manager Mackenzie Robb declined to comment on the eatery’s closure. Rudy’s last day of service was on Friday.

Ottawa to announce details of retaliatory tariffs on U.S. Tuesday

OTTAWA - The federal government is set to unveil details of Canada's retaliatory tariffs against the United States on Tuesday.

Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne, Industry Minister Mélanie Joly, Jobs Minister Patty Hajdu and Artificial Intelligence Minister Evan Solomon are also expected to share details of supports for workers affected by tariffs.

Solomon is also the minister responsible for the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario.

Communities on both sides of the Canada-U.S. border have been affected by the ongoing trade war.

Man sues WRHA, doctors after wrong leg amputated at Grace Hospital in 2024

A man whose left leg was mistakenly amputated — rather than his infected lower right leg — at the Grace Hospital in 2024 has filed a lawsuit against the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority and two doctors involved in his care.

Jason Kennedy, who lives in Winnipeg and is a member of Bloodvein First Nation, filed his statement of claim in Court of King’s Bench last week, naming the WRHA and orthopedic surgeons Dr. David John Dillon and Dr. Yiyang Zhang as defendants.

He accuses the health authority and doctors of negligence and breach of duty, among other allegations.

Kennedy was 48 when he went to Seven Oaks General Hospital on Oct. 22, 2024, with pain and an infection in his right foot.

‘How do I go on?’ Double homicide victim’s mother speaks at killers’ sentencing

A Portage la Prairie woman who returned home to find her adult son and his girlfriend shot dead told a court she struggles to go on in the wake of the drug world killing.

“All I want to do is sleep and not wake up, but I do and I want to give up,” Mary Bone said at a sentencing hearing earlier this month for killers Preston Whitford and Jeremy Whincup. “How do I go on?”

Bone’s son James Borden, 42, and his girlfriend Emily Smoke, 37, were killed Dec. 1, 2024, after the two accused forced their way into Bone’s home to collect a drug debt from Borden, court was told.

Whitford, who wielded the gun that shot the two victims, pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree murder and was sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole for 17 years. Whincup, Whitford’s uncle, pleaded guilty to two counts of manslaughter and was sentenced to 18 years in prison.

PM Carney unveils $11 billion in funding to make 6 icebreakers in Quebec

LÉVIS - The federal government will pour $11.3 billion into Quebec's shipbuilding industry to build six new icebreakers for the Canadian Coast Guard, Prime Minister Mark Carney said on Monday.

Carney called it the "largest" shipbuilding contract in the province's history.

"We will move fast. The first steel will be cut next fall, the first ship will be delivered five years later, and the full fleet will be in service five years after that," Carney said.

"They will work in Atlantic Canada, the St. Lawrence throughout the depth of winter, and in our Arctic throughout the summer."

City’s landfill gas project hasn’t gained any steam after four years

Four years after the city started working on a proposal to convert potent landfill gases into renewable energy, a lack of buyers is being blamed for holding the project up.

In March 2022, city council directed staff to complete a deal with Integrated Gas Recovery Services, which would see Winnipeg become a raw landfill gas supplier and potentially earn millions of dollars of new revenue.

If city council approved the proposed contract, the reuse of landfill gas would then replace the city’s current practice of flaring — burning as it’s released — the vast majority of methane produced at Brady Road landfill.

However, the effort has faced a few different roadblocks since it began.

‘Menu of options’: Manitoba to follow Ottawa on tariff impact supports

The Manitoba government is considering a “menu of options” for tariff-hit businesses as some companies watch sales fall off a cliff.

Business Minister Jamie Moses convened with the province’s U.S. Trade Council on Monday — two days after 50 per cent tariffs rolled out on US$20-billion worth of Canadian exports to the United States.

Tax deferrals and loans are on the “menu of options” the province is considering, Moses said before the meeting. More details should come later this week, he added.
