Hey there, time traveller!
This article was published 18/11/2015 (3974 days ago), so information in it may no longer be current.
Dear Miss Lonelyhearts: I now live with my girlfriend, age 62, who talks incessantly in a high voice. Yap, yap, yap! She recently sold her little house and moved into my house. I have a very big place, but I can’t stand it anymore with her in it. When she was at her house half the time, it was OK. I could go home when I wanted to. Now I can’t take it. She is a nice, pretty, kind woman with a good heart and she is going to be brokenhearted when I tell her she has to move out because her annoying voice and her yipping are driving me nuts.
I let her move here because she’s a great cook and an enthusiastic, passionate lover. I thought it would be fun, but living with her 24/7 when we are both retired is too much already. I’m not a drinker, yet I went to the bar for three hours yesterday afternoon rather than go home and face the yapping. How do I tell her to leave, and when?
— Going Stark-Raving Nuts, Tuxedo
Dear Going Nuts: Surely you knew how much she liked to talk when you lived in separate residences. Did you think that would stop when she moved in with you? No, she’s still herself — very social — and the huge house might even make her feel lonely. What you’re about to do will be heartbreaking and embarrassing for her, but you need your privacy back, so do it quickly. It’s going to be a shock either way, so tell her before she’s completely unpacked all the boxes.
Then ease the pain by helping her find a new place with your money. You heard me! You owe her big time. You are about to inconvenience and humiliate this woman in a big way, so offer to pay for the moving, packing, deposit and first month on her new apartment. It doesn’t matter that she got some money from her own house recently. You are causing her a huge expense and personal pain. You have the money, so at least be a gentlemen about this aspect. And tell her she can tell her friends the move was her idea. Help her to save face.
